The royal fern, also known as osmunda regalis and the flowering plant, is an elegant addition to wet areas along ponds, streams, water gardens, bog, shaded borders, woodland gardens, wild gardens, and native plants. This non-flowering plant has a unique texture and striking structure. It is tall with broad fronds that have large, well-separated leaflets. Spring, Summer, and fall are the best time for growing; its fronds usually turn yellow to brown in autumn. Bead-like spores are found in bunches at the tips of the fronds.
Royal Fern Loves Shade And Damp Soil
The plant is best grown in mostly shaded, medium-to-wet soil but is also well drained. It thrives in clammy, rich, acidic soil but may adapt to a lesser condition with consistent moisture. While the plant prefers a cooler climate, it can tolerate the sun's strength with lots of water, keeping the soil moist throughout the day. The plant is resistant to the damage of browsing rabbits and deer. Make sure to allow plenty of room for growth; it may reach 4-6 feet in height, 2-3 feet spread, and 18in in spacing.
The Royal Fern Is A Slow Grower
Most Royal ferns grow slowly, so reaching their maximum size may take several years. Location and plenty of shade throughout the day are key for healthy growth. They need very little care, making them easy to grow; keeping this plant likely won’t be much of a hassle. They are also pest—and disease-free, making them very kid-friendly.
