Elderberry Bush - Sambucus

Elderberry bushes are deciduous shrubs native to Europe, Asia, and North America. They are often found in wetland areas and can grow up to 10 feet tall. The bush is a part of the honeysuckle family, and its scientific name is Sambucus nigra.

Attracts Pollinators

This bush produces clusters of small white or cream-colored flowers in late Spring or early summer 2024. These flowers are highly fragrant and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. The flowers also produce elderflower cordial, a sweet and refreshing drink famous in many countries.

Medicinal Uses Of Elderberry Bush

After the flowers fade, the bush produces small, dark berries about the size of a pea. These berries are high in vitamin C and antioxidants and have been used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat various ailments. Today, supplements and syrups are popular natural remedies for colds and flu.

Other Uses

Elderberries are also used in cooking, in addition to their medicinal properties. Their tart flavor pairs well with sweet dishes and can be used to make jams, jellies, and pies. Elderberries also flavor alcoholic beverages, such as wine and liqueurs.

Low-Maintenance

These bushes are hardy, low-maintenance plants that can quickly grow in many climates. They prefer moist soil and full sun but can also tolerate partial shade. The bushes are propagated by cuttings or by dividing established plants.

Plant bare-root shrubs during the more excellent spring or fall months, from November through April. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root system and slightly more profound than its height. Position the shrub so that the top of the roots is level with the ground, and put back the soil dug over the roots. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, ensuring the mulch does not touch the shrub's stem. Water regularly, especially during the first year, to establish strong roots. Prune shrubs as needed to promote healthy growth. In the spring, fertilize with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer suited to the specific needs of the shrub.
