Why the Chinese Fringe Tree Is a Must-Have for Your Landscape

The Chinese fringe tree (Chionanthus Virginicus) is an exceptional addition to any landscape, prized for its delicate beauty and resilience. It is also one of the planet's most showy and ornamental subshrubs. It's hardy in zones 3-9 and highly fragrant, making it a family favorite.

Planting and Caring for the Elegant Chinese Fringe Tree

In late spring, this tree bursts into a stunning display of fragrant, feathery white flowers that resemble delicate fringe, creating a breathtaking contrast against its dark green foliage. Beyond its ornamental appeal, the Chinese fringe tree is low-maintenance and adaptable, thriving in various soil types and withstanding urban pollution.

Its fragrant blooms attract beneficial pollinators like bees and butterflies, enhancing biodiversity in the garden. Its leaves become rich yellow as the seasons change, providing a vibrant autumn color.

With its modest size and elegant form, the Chinese fringe tree is perfect for small or large lawns because it does not grow huge and stays under 15 feet tall. It's a type of sub-shrub that homeowners want but seldom can locate. At Garden Plants Nursery, we have only 345 of these. It takes the seed two years and even longer to get this size. Buy your fringe tree while you can.

Top Benefits of Adding a Chinese Fringe Tree to Your Garden

At Garden Plants Nursery, we are a 59-year-old, 3rd-generation mail-order nursery specializing in native plants. Why choose native trees and shrubs over man-made, modified, and hybridized ones? They are hardy, live for decades, are disease and pest-resistant, and, best of all, super low maintenance.

Plant bare root trees during the dormant season in early spring or late fall (November through April). Dig the hole twice as wide as the roots so the soil is well-drained. Position the tree so the root flare is at or just above ground level. Fill the hole back with the soil you dug from and water. Maintain soil moisture, especially in the tree's early years, by providing deep, regular watering. Apply a 2-4 inch mulch away from the trunk at the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune trees during the first few seasons to establish strength and resilience, remove damaged branches, and continue maintenance pruning as the tree matures. Regularly inspect for pests and diseases and apply integrated pest management practices. Protect young trees from mechanical damage and extreme temperatures with tree guards, and stake them if necessary for support, removing the stakes after one or two years.
