Peat Moss - Sphagnum

Peat moss is an organic material commonly used for soil amendment. It is derived from decomposed plant material, primarily sphagnum moss, accumulated in bogs and wetlands for thousands of years.

It has a high water-holding capacity and can absorb up to 25 times its weight in water, which makes it an excellent soil conditioner for plants that require moist soil. It is also acidic, with a pH between 3.5 and 4.5, which can benefit acid-loving plants like blueberries and rhododendrons.

In addition to its use as a soil amendment, it is also used for various other purposes, including as a fuel source, a substrate for mushroom cultivation, and a material for horticultural and agricultural applications such as seed starting and turf grass establishment.

Where To Plant

This moss can be used in various gardening and landscaping applications. Here are some examples of where to plant the moss:

  1. Acid-loving plants: The moss is an excellent soil amendment for acid-loving plants like blueberries, azaleas, and rhododendrons. These plants require acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5, and peat moss can help lower the pH of the soil.
  2. Container gardens: Moss can be mixed with other soil amendments like perlite and vermiculite to create a lightweight, well-draining soil mix ideal for container gardening. Its high water-holding capacity also makes it a good choice for plants that require consistent moisture.
  3. Seed starting: Moss can be used as a seed starting mix, either on its own or mixed with other soil amendments. Its fine texture makes it easy for seeds to germinate and establish roots.
  4. Lawn establishment: The moss can be used as a top dressing on newly seeded lawns to help retain moisture and promote seed germination. It can also be used as a soil amendment when establishing new turf grass.

This Is How Your Plants Will Look upon Delivery

Choose early spring or fall when the soil is moist and cool to plant healthy bare-root ferns. You can also use dormant plants to grow year-round. When you arrive, please soak the roots in water for several hours to rehydrate them. Ferns thrive in moist and shaded areas. Dig a hole wide and deep enough to spread out the roots comfortably. Position the fern so the crown (where the roots meet the fronds) is just at or slightly below ground level. Gently backfill with soil firmly around the roots, and thoroughly water to settle the soil and eliminate air pockets. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch for weed control and to retain moisture, ensuring the mulch does not touch the crown. Water during dry periods is used to keep soil moist but not soggy. Avoid fertilizing in the first year, as ferns prefer nutrient-rich soil over direct fertilization.

Shipping date depends on the date displayed and chosen when you order from the product's page.
