American Beech Tree - Fagus Grandifolia

The American Beech tree, also known as Fagus, is native to Europe, Asia, and North America. It's an enormous tree that can grow up to 40 meters in height and has a broad spreading crown with smooth gray bark.

Distinctive Leaves

These trees are known for their leaves, which are oval-shaped with a pointed tip and a finely serrated edge. In the autumn, the leaves turn a golden yellow or copper before falling.

The American Beech Tree Produces Flowers in the Spring

It produces small, inconspicuous flowers in the spring, followed by small nuts enclosed in a prickly shell. These nuts are an essential food source for many wildlife species, including birds, squirrels, and deer. They are also valued for their wood, which is rugged and durable and used in various applications, including furniture, flooring, and veneer. Additionally, it is sometimes used to smoke foods, particularly cheeses.

In folklore, they are associated with knowledge, wisdom, and writing. The wood was traditionally used for carving runes, and the bark was used to make parchment for writing.

Where To Find

It is a member of the Fagaceae family. It is a deciduous tree in Europe, North America, and Asia. The wood is commonly used for furniture, flooring, and other interior design purposes. The leaves and nuts of the tree are also used for medicinal purposes. Besides its practical uses, the tree has a cultural significance worldwide. For example, in Celtic mythology, the tree is associated with wisdom and knowledge. It is also a popular subject in art and literature. Some products use extracts or derivatives. For example, sap is sometimes used in skincare products because of its moisturizing properties. Some natural food flavorings and sweeteners are also derived from the bark extract.

Beech Tree is named for more than patriotic regions. This particular species is native to America, with most of its growing locations in the eastern part of the United States and some in the southeastern portion of Canada.

The range of growth goes as far west as Wisconsin and south down to Florida. There is even a variation in Mexico that some consider related to it. A few varieties are recognized, though they are considered less distinct.

One of the more distinctive features of this particular plant is its branches and winter twigs, which can be long, thin, and paired in their growth towards the sky. The bark is a little scale-like, and the buds have overlapping rows of scales.

Tree's Buds

One of the easy-to-distinguish characteristics is the bud, which is often referred to as resembling a cigar, making it easier to determine among other trees. It is also a more shade-tolerant tree than many others and is commonly found in forests due to its nature. They favor a combination of well-watered but sound drainage systems for growth with more requirements for moisture and rich soils than other options.

Native to eastern North America, the Beech tree is a slow-growing ornamental tree with a strong and heavy bark. During autumn, the leaves turn a beautiful golden color. This tree also produces nuts that are edible to humans.

Bare Root Plants

Plant bare root trees during the dormant season in early spring or late fall (November through April). Dig the hole twice as wide as the roots so the soil is well-drained. Position the tree so the root flare is at or just above ground level. Fill the hole back with the soil you dug from and water. Maintain soil moisture, especially in the tree's early years, by providing deep, regular watering. Apply a 2-4 inch mulch away from the trunk at the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune trees during the first few seasons to establish strength and resilience, remove damaged branches, and continue maintenance pruning as the tree matures. Regularly inspect for pests and diseases and apply integrated pest management practices. Protect young trees from mechanical damage and extreme temperatures with tree guards, and stake them if necessary for support, removing the stakes after one or two years.
