Trees That Hold Up Well
River birch (*Betula nigra*) ranks among the most reliably passed-over trees we grow, thanks to its papery, exfoliating bark and thin leaves that offer little nutritional payoff for the browsing effort. It also tolerates wet sites better than most shade trees, which makes it a practical pick for low spots that stay soggy after rain.
American holly (*Ilex opaca*) earns its resistance from spiny, leathery foliage that deer find unpleasant to chew. As an evergreen, it gives you a plant that stays intact through the winter months when browse pressure typically peaks and other food sources thin out.
Bald cypress (*Taxodium distichum*) is worth mentioning for anyone gardening near a pond, stream, or floodplain — it tolerates standing water while carrying a scent profile deer generally avoid. It's deciduous despite the "cypress" name, so expect it to drop its needle-like foliage each fall.
Trees Worth a Second Look
Redbud and dogwood, two of the most popular flowering trees we ship, carry moderate resistance at best. Deer browse young redbud especially hard in spring when new growth is tender. If you're planting either species in an area with a known deer population, plan on protection through the first two to three seasons until the trunk and lower branches grow beyond easy reach.
Shrubs With a Track Record

Butterfly bush and lilac fall into the moderate category. Both get sampled occasionally, particularly new growth in spring, but established plants generally recover fine from light browsing.
Perennials for the Border
Bearded iris, daffodil, and peony form a reliable trio for a deer resistant perennial border. Daffodil is worth calling out specifically since the bulb and foliage contain compounds that make it one of the few plants deer treat as essentially off the menu — a good anchor to plant in numbers along the front edge of a bed that otherwise contains more vulnerable species.
Russian sage, catmint, and lamb's ear round out a strong resistant grouping, all relying on scent or texture rather than toxicity. These pair well in a mixed border and tolerate the same well-drained soil conditions, which makes designing around them straightforward.
Hosta, on the other hand, ranks among the plants most consistently browsed by deer despite occasionally appearing on generic "shade perennial" lists paired with resistant companions. If hosta is central to your shade garden plan, budget for repellent spray or fencing rather than relying on the plant itself to go untouched.
Building a Planting That Holds Up
The most effective approach we see from customers combines genuinely resistant species as the backbone of a bed, with any less-resistant favorites — redbud, hosta, roses — placed closer to the house or behind a fence line where deer travel less. Mixing scent-based deterrents (Russian sage, boxwood) with texture-based ones (lamb's ear, holly) also tends to outperform a bed planted with a single resistance strategy, since it gives a browsing deer fewer categories of appealing options to test.
